The ramadan being one of the special days in the calendar of the muslim umar to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to muslims is a season that love is being shared amongst muslim faithfuls. This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
As a custom, Muslims go all out after ramadan to get themselves food and clothing items as a way of celebrating the successful conclution of the fast.
Even with the raging economic downturn the nation is experiencing, we still see people in their thousands trooping in and out of the various markets accross the country to buy one thing or the other (Nigerians are unstoppable).
During the fasting period between 6th of Just and 5th of July from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations. Muslims are also instructed to refrain from sinful behavior that may negate the reward of fasting, such as false speech (insulting, backbiting, cursing, lying, etc.) and fighting. Food and drinks are served daily, before dawn and after sunset. Spiritual rewards (thawab) for fasting are also believed to be multiplied within the month of Ramadan. Fasting for Muslims during Ramadan typically includes the increased offering of salat (prayers) and recitation of the Quran.
During the Eid El Fitri celebration, the affluent make use of Rams or Cows to celebrate, while the 'not too wealthy' class who cannot meet up with the level of flambuoyance of the former make use of Goats or Turkeys and then the third class citizens who can hardly eat three square meals per day are left to go for hungry-looking and premature Chickens.(at least, half bread is better than puf-puf)
I look foreward to the time when we will look back at the past: a communal lifestyle that our forefathers lived. Consequently, we will no longer work to develope our pockets but will be patriotic Nigerians who will fight for the relegated and support those in need.
Barka De Salah to you all. Enjoy your holiday and be safe- love from Joseph *winks*
