Suspected serial rapist set ablaze in Delta

an angry mob on Wednesday set ablaze a suspected member of a gang of serial rapists that had terrorised Ughelli and its neighbouring communities in Delta State.

No fewer than four ladies, including the wife of a popular hotelier in the metropolis, had been raped by the gang of rapists in the last two weeks.

One of the victims lost her life in the process.

The group, according to residents, specialises in raping and attacking salesgirls and middle-aged women.

Luck, however, ran out on the suspected member of the group on Wednesday when he allegedly attempted to rape a salesgirl (name withheld) at the Adagharagba Junction near the Ughelli Central Market.

He was said to have been apprehended by the residents.

It was gathered that the suspect was apprehended by a mob at about 11.30am when he attempted to rape the salesgirl.

A resident, who witnessed the incident, told our correspondent that there had been a lot of killings and rape by a group of young men who targeted salesgirls and female traders within Ughelli and its environs.

The source noted that the suspected rapist had confessed that he was a member of a three-member gang that raped salesgirls and female traders in the community.

The suspect, who hailed from Oroahakpor community in Ethiope-West Local Government Area of the state, reportedly said other members of the gang fled on sighting the mob.

Another eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The hoodlums pretended to be customers buying things in bulk and that was why they were allowed to enter the store. The next thing we heard was the screaming of the salesgirl and we immediately rushed in only to see that that she had been attacked; she was bleeding.

“The mob pursued the suspects, who had fled the scene. They caught up with one of them at the Omotor Junction, where he was set ablaze before the arrival of security agents.”

The salesgirl, while recounting her ordeal at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Ughelli Central Hospital where she was receiving treatment, said the suspects came under the guise of wanting to purchase items from the store.

She said, “One of them hit me on the head and I screamed.I was rescued by a male neighbour, who rushed to the shop, after the suspects had fled the scene.”

It was later gathered that another member of the group was arrested along Market Road by policemen from the Ughelli Police Division.

The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Celestina Kalu, said she had not been briefed on the incident.

Stepmother remanded for cutting off baby’s penis

A 22-year-old woman, Bara’atu Rabiu, has been remanded in the Minna Medium Security Prison for allegedly cutting off the penis of her rival’s one-month-old baby, Buhari.

She was arraigned on Monday on one count of attempted homicide before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Minna.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Bara’atu allegedly cut off the victim’s penis at their home in Kuta town, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

It was learnt that the suspect had been married to her husband, Mohammed Rabiu, for seven years, without a child.

She allegedly cut off the baby’s penis to punish him for marrying a second wife.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bala James, explained that the suspect wanted to kill the victim, adding that the child, who was named after President Muhammadu Buhari, survived the attack.

He said, “The woman used a sharp knife to cut through the genitals of the one-month-old baby. She had been married to her husband for seven years without any child. So, out of pressure, the man decided to marry a second wife.

“When the second wife had a baby, she became angry and frustrated. She thought the best thing to do was to kill the child.

“On June 21, around 10pm, she took the baby to the backyard of their house and used a sharp knife to cut off his penis.

“The cry of the baby attracted neighbours, who rushed to the place and found him in a pool of blood. The suspect wanted to run away, but she was overpowered. She was handed over to the police, while the baby was taken to a hospital.”

The baby was said to have been taken to the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida Specialist Hospital, Minna.

Our correspondent was told that a surgical operation to enable him to pass out urine was immediately performed.

The Head of Department, General Outpatient Ward of the hospital, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed, said the boy might never regain the use of his private parts.

He explained that all the tissues in the affected part had been dead before he was brought to the hospital.

He said, “He is doing well – health-wise. He survived the attack. However, there is no assurance of the penis getting back because all the tissues were dead when he was brought into the hospital. We just had to conduct a surgery for him to be able to pass urine.

“Medically, for him to regain the use of his manhood will be difficult.  If the team that was supposed to work on him had been around immediately, maybe the situation would have been different. For such a case, you need a general surgeon, a neurologist and a plastic surgeon. But these were not available. His future right now is in the hands of God. Another possibility is if there is artificial attachment.

“I really pity the boy’s condition. I cannot imagine that somebody will do this to a baby. It is better for the child to die than for him to be in this condition.  Even if he survives, what purpose will he be living for?”

The suspect, who was arraigned on Monday on one count of attempted homicide, was remanded in prison by the court.

Heartbroken Messi retires from international football

Lionel Messi sensationally announced his retirement from international football after Argentina crashed to an upset defeat against Chile in the final of the Copa America.

The heartbroken Barcelona superstar was distraught after missing a spot-kick as Chile snatched victory in a penalty shoot-out – Messi’s fourth straight defeat in a major final while representing Argentina.

“For me the national team is over,” the crestfallen 29-year-old told reporters.

“I’ve done all I can, I’ve been in four finals and it hurts not to be a champion.

“It’s a hard moment for me and the team, and it’s difficult to say, but it’s over with the Argentina team.”

Messi’s dramatic announcement followed Argentina’s third loss in a major final since 2014.

They were beaten 1-0 by Germany in the final of the World Cup in 2014 and lost on penalties, also to Chile, in the final of the 2015 Copa America.

Messi also tasted defeat with Argentina in the final of the 2007 Copa America.

Despite a glittering career that has seen him be named FIFA World Player of the Year on no fewer than five occasions, Messi has faced persistent sniping from critics in Argentina.

Yet he received support on Sunday from Chile’s victorious Argentine coach Juan Antonio Pizzi, who maintained that Messi deserves to be regarded as the best ever.

“As well as an admiration for Messi, I’m driven very much by his numbers,” Pizzi said of Messi’s record-breaking career.

“I know what it means to value certain numbers and Messi’s numbers are unmatched, and I don’t think they will ever be matched because it’s impossible for a player to find the things that Messi finds.”

But while universally regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever, he has
regularly been targeted for his inability to land a major title in the colors of Argentina.

His achievement will always linger in the minds of everyone.  I believe this is a step further further in his life as an athlete

Dried-up River Ogun: Wonder to many, worry to residents

Some called it a wonder. Others described it a as mystery. Some others said it was a sign from the gods.

“The aliens are coming from the underground,” one said, while another, obviously a Christian, declared, “God is using this to warn us that our sins are too many! He is using this sign to tell us to repent before He destroys the world.”

It meant different things to different people.

Since last Saturday morning, many Lagos and Ogun residents, motorists and passers-by have been trooping to the Kara area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway — a 2.5-kilometre walk from Berger Bus stop, Lagos — to catch a glimpse of a section of the Ogun River which was suddenly overgrown with plants known as water hyacinths.

Experts said the incident was caused by a heavy storm, thus creating a dense layer of sand over the river and making it possible for people to walk over.

It was an occurrence many people, including residents and traders in the area, had never witnessed since the beginning of time.

“We started to observe as the plants grew on the surface of the river on Friday morning. The process was gradual. By afternoon, the water couldn’t move freely again. More plants started to grow,” Ismaila Mohammed, a cattle rearer in the area, told Saturday PUNCH on Tuesday evening. “By Saturday, all we could see was a river which had turned to dry land in about two days. I have been here for more than seven years and I have never seen a thing like this all my life.”

He added that what was shocking to him was that the second section of the river was still overflowing with water.

Many other people like Mohammed have also never seen it happen before anywhere — a body of river being zapped by some green plants which came out of nowhere.

Bewildered by the “strange” occurrence, the area has since turned to a tourist centre of sort to many people.

Many motorists parked their cars along the expressway to watch the scene; some schoolchildren could not hide their excitement as they trooped to the area after closing from school; stunt-proving motorcyclists rode on the vegetation; cameras were flashing from the hands of everyone.

Some people, who believed it was a wonder from God, immediately turned the river-turned-dry land to a prayer ground, while some people laid mats on it, turning it to a recreation ground.

“This is amazing!” a fair-complexioned woman exclaimed as she stepped out of her grey Ford SUV to join the crowd of ‘tourists’ on the bridge.

Wonder to some, worry to others

No one could have predicted that the Kara River would turn to dry land in about 48 hours.

Baffled by this occurrence, Kelechi Obi, one of the scores of people who were at the scene, told Saturday PUNCH that the incident had strengthened his faith in God.

Describing it as a wonder, he said, “I am astonished at this incident. If it is not wonder, what shall we call it? Why didn’t any agency predict it would happen? How can a body of river suddenly turn to dry land? Where were the plants before? Were they hiding or what? How were they planted? How did they grow suddenly? These are some of the many questions cropping up in my mind.

“This tells me that anything is possible. God can turn around a man’s situation in few seconds. This is God at work. This incident has strengthened my faith in God that nothing is impossible for Him to do. In the Bible, God turned the Red Sea to dry land for the Israelites in just few seconds. He is doing it again in our time to prove to us He is God.”

A man, simply called Taiwo, who was travelling from Ibadan, described it as a mystery.

“I read about it in the newspaper on Sunday and I decided I was going to branch here while returning to Lagos. I have been travelling on this expressway for many years and I know about the river. Seeing it dry up is mysterious,” he said.

Taiwo said such an occurrence was meant to prove to people that God was mysterious.

“This is the period of fasting and as a Muslim, I believe that this is a proof that God

“Some people were saying we should not ride on it, but we proved to them that there was nothing wrong that was going to happen. We are not afraid. It is no more water body again, it is dry land,” he said.

Our correspondent learned some canoe passengers almost drowned on Saturday while the plants were rapidly growing on the water body.

According to Ijaya, “There were five passengers in the canoe; they were all meat sellers. As they were on the water, the plants grew so rapidly that they got the canoe stuck and almost made it sink.

“Thank God the driver quickly came down and held on to the plants and waded through the vegetation onto the other side. By then, some people from the other side threw a rope and pulled the canoe back to safety. They almost got drowned. We are happy nobody died.”

A suited man drove past speedily in a tinted black Mercedes SUV, then suddenly slowed down, stopped his car, reversed and parked along the expressway.

“O my God! What is this?” his mouth uttered as he stepped out of his vehicle, then added, “This is indeed a miracle. Who could ever have imagined this happening just some few days ago? This is amazing.”

While it is amazing, mysterious, miraculous, or wonderful to some people, some residents and traders at Kara told Saturday PUNCH they were worried about the development.

Prior to the incident, the river once served as a source of water to them in their businesses. But now, they may face the challenge of water scarcity, except water starts flowing again to the river.

A middle-aged woman, Christy Egbu, sat outside her shop in the evening of Tuesday, peeling some tubers of cassava which she would later process to fufu, a smooth white staple food eaten with soup.

She said, “I have never seen this happen all my life. It is a mystery and it is worrying. We usually wash the cassavas after peeling them. A lot of water is needed to wash them thoroughly. It’s one of the reasons we’re resident in this area. We also fetch water from the river to wash our clothes and kitchen utensils.

“But since Saturday when the river was covered with the plants, we have been using rain water to wash. Thank God it’s rainy season. We have some buckets filled with rainwater. If not for the rain, it would have been so difficult for us. We hope that the river will flow back.”

Canoe owners used to ply the river, but woke up on Saturday morning to see their route being blocked by the vegetation.

“The canoes are resting now,” said Egbu, “We simply walk over the vegetation now to cross to the other side. Before, if we were to go to the Kara market to buy meat or sell food to our customers, we used the canoes. They’re resting now.”

Esther, a food vendor in the area, said she used to wash plates and pots with water from the river.

“Now, that’s no longer possible. But thank God for the rain. However, I don’t use rainwater or the river water to cook. I buy water from the meruwas (people who sell water). I too was so scared when I saw green plants on the river on Saturday because I had never seen something like this in my life,” she said, adding, “I hope the river will flow back, though. It’s less stressful when you readily have a water source to wash and do some other things.”

A butcher at the Kara abattoir, simply identified as Adamu, told our correspondent it had been pretty difficult for him and his colleagues to thoroughly wash meat since Saturday.

He said, “We normally use the river to wash meat after slaughtering cows or goats. It was a steady source. We didn’t have to worry about water supply. Now, our water source is gone. We are managing to use rainwater, but it doesn’t rain every day.

“Our prayer is that before the rain stops, the river should have started flowing again. We have never witnessed a thing like this since we’re here. It came suddenly. There was even no sign. An abattoir needs a steady source of water supply to wash meat. The water must come back.”

Adamu’s colleague, Mohammed, also from Kano State

Their cows, obviously used to drinking water from the river, stooped low first to drink from the little mass of water that still remained, then marched on the vegetation, feeding along on it as they went.

However, the rearers wouldn’t allow them to go so far. The farther they went, the more dangerous it could be as there could still be some water underneath the vegetation, one of the rearers, Idris Muhammad, said.

“This development is both good and bad. Now we don’t need to go very far to feed our cattle. Now we have a mini grazing reserve. However, we still need to source for water for them. Not a problem too much, though,” he said.

What exactly are the green plants?

Not a mystery or sign. Geology experts said the plants on the Kara river are known as Eichhornia crassipes, commonly known as water hyacinths.

They are an aquatic plant native to the Amazon basin, and are often considered a highly problematic invasive species outside its native range.

They are a free-floating perennial aquatic plant native to tropical and sub-tropical South America with broad, thick, glossy, ovate leaves which may rise above the surface of the water as much as one metre in height.

One of the fastest growing plants known, water hyacinths , reproduce primarily by way of runners or stolons, which eventually form daughter plants. Each plant can produce about 3,000 seeds each year, and these seeds can remain viable for more than 28 years.

Some water hyacinths can grow up to 2 to 5 metres a day in some sites and can double their population in just few days.

Their invasiveness is related to their ability to clone themselves, and when not controlled, they can cover an entire body mass entirely.

They dramatically impact water flow, block sunlight from reaching native aquatic plants, and starve the water of oxygen, often killing any fish or other animals in the water.

The plants also create a prime habitat for mosquitos and often invade bodies of water that have been impacted by human activities.

Though they can be controlled physically, chemically and biologically, the spread of the invasive alien species is neither easy to manage nor easy to reverse, threatening not only biodiversity, but also economic development and human wellbeing, according to the United Nations Environment Programme.

However, as dangerous as they could be, water hyacinths can be harnessed for environmental benefit and renewable energy production, according to a study by the Economy and Environment Programme for Southeast Asia.

In a study conducted by Zanxin Wang and Jin Wan from the School of Development Studies at Yunnan University in China, the weed can be used for the production of biogas.

However, there are needs for institutional arrangements for coordination, finance and drive for the development of a network of such biogas plants.

Meanwhile, Dr. Folorunsho Adetayo, Department of Geosciences, University of Lagos, had told Sunday PUNCH that the rainy season could have contributed to the appearance of the plants.

“The government, however, needs to remove the plants because if allowed to stay long, it can become toxic to plants and animals, including human beings,” he said.

Keep off, experts warn ‘tourists’

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye, has advised people who have turned the Kara river scene to a tourist centre to desist from doing so, adding that excavation of the weed would soon start.

“Water hyacinth is not new; it simply means the water body is low at this point in time. People are not supposed to walk on the place. It allows dangerous animals to inhabit the place. River Ogun is important to us. It drains into the Lagoon. We can’t have this for a long time because it is going to affect a lot of things,” he said on Channels TV.

In a similar manner, the Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Adebowale Akinsanya, said in a statement that it was dangerous for residents to walk on the dried Og

No more dollars for Eagles home games

Dollars rain for the Super Eagles may be coming to an end as the Nigeria Football Federation is working on paying the players in the Nigerian currency when matches are played in Nigeria as opposed to the payment of dollars for match bonuses whether they play in Nigeria or abroad.

An Africanfootball.com report stated that it was part of the decisions taken by the NFF technical committee at their meeting in Abuja on Tuesday. The committee is also putting forward several far-reaching recommendations including the scrapping of dollar payment to the various national teams and match-by-match bonuses as well as placing assistant coaches on part-time basis.

A top official of the NFF said some other decisions are that players and officials of the various national teams will no longer be paid in US dollars for home matches and the national teams will not be paid bonuses on match-by-match basis, but rather for various stages of a tournament, like qualifying for a major tournament and reaching the various rounds of these competitions.

It was also learnt that as part of measures to reduce the heavy financial burden on the NFF, only the head coaches of the various national teams will have full-time contracts, while their assistants will be on part-time basis and expected to tie down jobs with teams in the various leagues.

“We believe some of these measures will go a long on reducing the heavy financial pressure on the NFF,” the official said.

The chairman of the committee Chris Green however said he was not aware of such decision when he spoke with The PUNCH on Wednesday.

He said, “We discussed the U23 team and how we could help secure all the players (Samson) Siasia needs and we also discussed getting a substantive coach for the Eagles. The one on dollars is strange to me.”

But despite his denial another official of the NFF told The PUNCH, “I am sure of the details of that meeting but I wouldn’t be surprised because the President did mention in recent past that there was the need to discuss the matter and reduce the pressure that the dollars has created on everybody.”

The police in Lagos State have arrested a woman, Funmi Otitoloju, for allegedly brutalising her 12-year-old niece identified only as Adeola, in the Baiyeku community of Ikorodu.

Drowned Unilag students buried amid tears

Tears flowed freely on Friday at the Ikoyi Cemetary, Lagos, as the remains of Adesola Ogunmefun and Olufunmilayo Odusina, two University of Lagos post-graduate students who drowned and died during one of their friend’s birthday party at a private beach in the Lekki area of the city on June 6, 2016, were finally laid to rest.
An emotional tribute service which started as early as 11:00am, saw family members, friends and well wishers of the departed young women pour out in droves to bid them farewell.
In glowing words, mourners at the event paid tributes to the victims who many described as very charming and promising.Sunmibola Ogunmefun, a sibling to the late Adesola, said even though the family is in mourning, they are consoled by the good life she lived and impact she made during her sojourn on earth.
“Very simplistic, you’ve never been the kind to take things too seriously and your smile is from ear to ear. Keeping malice with you was futile, you’d always find a way to break the ice…never one to hold grudge.
“Sola, in your short years on earth, you’ve connected us with so many people and your death has brought reconciliation…you are indeed a special one,” she said while paying homage to her late sister.
Modupe Mujota, a boss to the late Adesola, described her as not only a workaholic but also a young lady with a warm heart.
In her tribute, she said, “Desola took care of me. She would wake me up daily at 6am and like a child I would often beg her for 15 more minutes. As many times as I asked, she would oblige me, she was that caring.
“Desola, our loss is heaven’s gain, light it up as always with your brilliant smiles. We love you dearly.”
Born on April 12, 1989, Adesola attended the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria Staff School Ikeja, Lagos, Home Science Association of Nigeria Secondary School and Covenant University before proceeding to the University of Lagos for a Masters degree in International Law.
